The GATE CSE Syllabus for 2027 is not the same as last year. IIT Madras, the organising institute for GATE 2027, has rewritten 3 of the 10 technical sections: Digital Logic, Computer Organization and Architecture (COA) and Computer Networks. The other 7 sections and General Aptitude are word for word the same as GATE 2026.
This guide explains each change, the important topics and the expected weightage. For a deeper look at marks, read our most scoring subject for GATE CSE 2027 guide. If your form is still pending, our post on the GATE 2027 registration extension has the steps, and you can track a submitted form with the GATE 2027 application status guide. Has the GATE CSE Syllabus Changed for 2027?
Yes. The GATE CSE Syllabus for 2027 changes 3 sections. Computer Networks has the biggest change, COA has a moderate change, and Digital Logic has only been reworded. Most edits either name a topic clearly or remove a protocol listed before.
The table below compares the 2026 wording with the new GATE CSE Syllabus, section by section.
| Section | Status in 2027 | Added or Now Named | Removed or No Longer Named |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Logic | Reworded | Algebraic technique, Karnaugh map and tabular method for minimization; design of circuits | Nothing |
| Computer Organization and Architecture | Changed | Control unit design (hardwired and microprogrammed), memory interfacing, memory performance | Main memory and secondary storage; data-path |
| Computer Networks | Changed the most | Principles of layering, performance metrics for switching, socket API | OSI and TCP/IP stacks, framing, bridging, shortest path and flooding routing, ARP, DHCP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP, FTP, Email |
| Engineering Mathematics, PDS, Algorithms, TOC, Compiler Design, OS, Databases | No change | – | – |
| General Aptitude | No change | – | – |
What the Computer Networks Change Means for You
The new Computer Networks section keeps the core: switching, error detection, Medium Access Control, Ethernet, distance vector and link state routing, IPv4 fragmentation, CIDR, NAT, TCP flow control and congestion control, DNS and HTTP. Subnetting, sliding window and TCP congestion window will stay the main source of marks.
ARP, DHCP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP and FTP are no longer named. Keep them in your notes, but give them less time. The new performance metrics line points to numerical questions on delay, throughput and efficiency, so practise those.
What the COA Change Means for You
COA now names control unit design, both hardwired and microprogrammed, and memory interfacing with performance. Expect more numerical questions on cache mapping, average memory access time and pipeline speedup. Disk questions (seek time, rotational delay) are now low priority, because secondary storage has been removed from the text.
The Digital Logic change is only wording. The tabular method is the Quine-McCluskey method, and it now appears in the text, so learn it along with K-maps.
GATE CSE Syllabus 2027: Exam Pattern
The GATE CSE paper (paper code CS) is a 3-hour computer based test with 65 questions for 100 marks. The GATE CSE Syllabus decides what is asked, and the pattern below decides how it is marked.
| Part | Marks | Question Types |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | MCQ, MSQ, NAT |
| Engineering Mathematics | About 13 | MCQ, MSQ, NAT |
| Core CSE subjects | About 72 | MCQ, MSQ, NAT |
| Total | 100 | 65 questions, 180 minutes |
Only MCQs carry negative marking: 1/3 mark for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking, so always attempt them.

GATE CSE Syllabus Weightage: Where the Marks Come From
Engineering Mathematics, Algorithms with Data Structures, and Computer Networks together bring close to 30 marks, while General Aptitude alone gives 15. The expected weightage below is based on recent GATE CSE papers. Treat it as a guide, not a promise.
| Subject | Expected Marks in GATE 2027 | Effect of the 2027 Change |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | None |
| Engineering Mathematics (incl. Discrete Maths) | 10 to 13 | None |
| Algorithms | 8 to 9 | None |
| Programming and Data Structures | 7 to 8 | None |
| Computer Networks | 7 to 9 | More numericals, fewer protocol facts |
| Operating System | 7 to 8 | None |
| Databases | 6 to 7 | None |
| Theory of Computation | 6 to 7 | None |
| Computer Organization and Architecture | 5 to 6 | More weight on cache and control unit |
| Digital Logic | 5 to 6 | Tabular method now named |
| Compiler Design | 4 to 5 | None |
Compiler Design and Digital Logic are short parts of the GATE CSE Syllabus but give steady marks every year, which makes them good value for time.
How GATE CSE Syllabus for 2027 Aspirants Should Adjust Their Plan
If you started preparing with the old syllabus, you do not need to restart. The GATE CSE Syllabus for 2027 Aspirants mostly asks you to shift some of your hours, as given below.
- Cut the time you give to ARP, DHCP, ICMP, UDP, SMTP and FTP, and move it to CIDR, subnetting and TCP congestion window numericals.
- Add hardwired vs microprogrammed control unit and memory interfacing to your COA notes.
- Learn the Quine-McCluskey (tabular) method once, along with K-maps.
- Keep the other 7 sections exactly as they were, since previous year questions from them are still fully valid.
- Solve GATE CSE papers from 2015 onwards, but skip the questions on topics that were removed.
With the exam on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, you have about 4 months left. Finish the syllabus by December, then use January for full-length mock tests and revision.
