The GATE 2027 Exam Pattern has 65 questions for 100 marks in a 3-hour computer based test (CBT), and every paper starts with a 15-mark General Aptitude section. Under the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme, every question carries 1 or 2 marks, and only wrong MCQs lose marks: 1/3 for a 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 for a 2-mark MCQ. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking, but they also give no partial marks.
This guide is built from the official Question Paper Pattern page and the GATE 2027 Information Brochure released by IIT Madras. Beyond the basic GATE 2027 Marking Scheme rules, it shows how the 65 questions split into 1-mark and 2-mark questions, how a real score is calculated, when guessing an MCQ helps, and how your raw marks turn into a GATE score. If you are still finishing your form, the GATE 2027 application form correction window is open till 21 October 2026.
Once you know the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern, match it with what to study. Our syllabus guides for GATE CSE 2027, GATE ECE 2027, GATE EE 2027, GATE ME 2027 and GATE Civil 2027 cover the revised topics, since IIT Madras has revised the syllabus of most papers this year.

IIT Madras keeps the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern the same for all 30 papers in duration, total marks and question count. A quick note on that count: the official GATE question paper pattern 2027 says 65 questions, not 60. A few websites still show 60, which is wrong for this year.
GATE 2027 Exam Pattern Section-wise Marks: GA, Engineering Mathematics and Subject
In the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern for engineering branches like CSE, ECE, EE, ME and Civil, the 100 marks split into 3 parts: General Aptitude (15 marks), Engineering Mathematics (13 marks) and core subject questions (72 marks). The Engineering Mathematics questions are paper-specific, so a CSE candidate gets topics like discrete mathematics and probability, while an ME candidate gets topics like differential equations and numerical methods.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude (GA) | 10 | 15 | 15% |
| Engineering Mathematics | Part of the 55 subject questions | 13 | 13% |
| Core subject | Part of the 55 subject questions | 72 | 72% |
| Total | 65 | 100 | 100% |
General Aptitude plus Engineering Mathematics is 28 marks, which is more than the qualifying mark of most branches in recent years. That is why toppers never skip these 2 sections. Papers like DA, CY, MA, PH, ST, RA, AR, GE, GG, XH and XL do not have a separate Engineering Mathematics share, so they carry 85 subject marks. All sections follow the same GATE 2027 Marking Scheme as the subject part.
How Many 1-Mark and 2-Mark Questions Are in the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern?
Under the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern, every paper has 30 questions of 1 mark and 35 questions of 2 marks. The brochure states the General Aptitude split directly: 5 questions of 1 mark and 5 questions of 2 marks. For the subject part, the split follows from simple maths, since 55 questions must add up to 85 marks and each question is worth only 1 or 2 marks.
| Part | 1-mark questions | 2-mark questions | Total questions | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 5 | 5 | 10 | 15 |
| Subject (incl. Engineering Mathematics) | 25 | 30 | 55 | 85 |
| Full paper | 30 | 35 | 65 | 100 |
This split in the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern matters for time planning. The 35 questions of 2 marks carry 70 of the 100 marks, so most of your 180 minutes should go to them. A good rule is to spend about 1.5 minutes on a 1-mark question and about 3.5 minutes on a 2-mark question, which leaves roughly 13 minutes at the end for review.
GATE 2027 Marking Scheme for MCQ, MSQ and NAT
The GATE 2027 Marking Scheme treats the 3 question types of the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern very differently. Only MCQs can reduce your total, while MSQs and NATs are all-or-nothing with no penalty. Here is the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme side by side.
| Question type | Options | Correct answer | Wrong answer | Partial marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ (1 mark) | 4, exactly 1 correct | +1 | −1/3 (−0.33) | No |
| MCQ (2 marks) | 4, exactly 1 correct | +2 | −2/3 (−0.67) | No |
| MSQ (1 or 2 marks) | 4, 1 or more correct | Full marks | 0 | No |
| NAT (1 or 2 marks) | No options, type a number | Full marks | 0 | No |
| Not attempted | Any | 0 | 0 | — |
Keep this GATE 2027 Marking Scheme table handy while you solve mock tests, since it decides which questions are worth attempting.
MCQ Rules in the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme
Each MCQ has 4 options and only 1 is correct. You get full marks only for the right option. Any other option brings the GATE 2027 negative marking into play: 1/3 mark is cut for a wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 mark for a wrong 2-mark MCQ. Leaving an MCQ blank costs nothing under the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme.
MSQ Rules in the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme
An MSQ also has 4 options, but 1 or more of them can be correct. You get marks only if you select the exact correct set. The brochure uses this example: which of these are prime factors of 96, with options 2, 3, 6 and 15. The answer is 2 and 3 together. Picking only 2, or picking 2, 3 and 6, both give zero.
The good news in the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme is that a wrong MSQ never reduces your score. So if you have worked out even part of the answer, it is always worth marking your best guess.
NAT Rules in the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme
A NAT question has no options. You type a signed number using the on-screen numeric keypad, as the computer keyboard stays disabled. The answer can be an integer such as 10 or −10, or a decimal such as 10.1, 10.01 or −10.001. The question itself tells you how many decimal places to enter.
IIT Madras advises rounding off only at the final step, not in the middle of your working. Early rounding is the most common way students lose NAT marks even after solving correctly. Under the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme, NATs carry no negative marking and no partial marking, just like MSQs.
GATE 2027 Negative Marking: Should You Guess an MCQ?
The GATE 2027 negative marking in the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme is designed so that a blind guess earns nothing on average. With 4 options, a random pick is right 1 time in 4. For a 1-mark MCQ, that is a gain of 1/4 against an expected loss of 3/4 × 1/3 = 1/4, so the net result is exactly zero. Things change once you can remove even 1 wrong option.
| Options left after elimination | Chance of being right | Average gain on a 1-mark MCQ | Average gain on a 2-mark MCQ | Should you attempt? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 (pure guess) | 25% | 0 | 0 | No real benefit, skip |
| 3 | 33% | +0.11 | +0.22 | Yes, small gain |
| 2 | 50% | +0.33 | +0.67 | Yes, clear gain |
| 1 (sure) | 100% | +1 | +2 | Always |
So the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme rewards smart guessing, not wild guessing. If you can rule out 1 or 2 options with real reasoning, attempt the MCQ. If you have no idea at all, skipping costs you nothing. For MSQ and NAT, always enter an answer, since there is no penalty.
Worked Example: How the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme Adds Up Your Score
Here is a sample attempt to show the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme in action. The GATE 2027 Exam Pattern does not fix the mix of MCQ, MSQ and NAT, and it changes from paper to paper, so treat these counts as an example, not the official split.
| Attempt | Right | Wrong | Calculation | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 MCQs of 1 mark | 15 | 5 | 15 × 1 − 5 × 1/3 | 13.33 |
| 15 MCQs of 2 marks | 10 | 5 | 10 × 2 − 5 × 2/3 | 16.67 |
| 4 MSQs of 1 mark | 3 | 1 | 3 × 1 − 0 | 3 |
| 6 MSQs of 2 marks | 4 | 2 | 4 × 2 − 0 | 8 |
| 5 NATs of 1 mark | 4 | 1 | 4 × 1 − 0 | 4 |
| 5 NATs of 2 marks | 3 | 2 | 3 × 2 − 0 | 6 |
| 55 attempted, 10 left | 39 | 16 | — | 51 |
This student got 39 right answers worth 56 marks but lost 5 marks to the 10 wrong MCQs. Under the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme, the 6 wrong MSQs and NATs cost nothing. Cutting just 6 careless MCQ errors would have been worth about 3 extra marks, and in a crowded paper like CSE or ME, 3 marks can make a big difference to your rank.
Paper-wise Marks Distribution in the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern
The GATE 2027 Exam Pattern is the same for all 30 papers in total marks and time, but the sections inside each paper differ. Here is the paper-wise GATE 2027 Exam Pattern from Table 8 of the GATE 2027 Information Brochure.
| Papers | GA | Common section | Optional section | Total | When you choose the optional part |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, NM, PE, PI | 15 | 85 (includes 13 Engineering Mathematics) | — | 100 | — |
| CY, DA, EY, MA, PH, ST | 15 | 85 | — | 100 | — |
| AR (B1 Architecture or B2 Planning) | 15 | 60 | 25 | 100 | During the exam |
| GE (B1 Surveying and Mapping or B2 Image Processing) | 15 | 55 | 30 | 100 | During the exam |
| GG (B1 Geology or B2 Geophysics) | 15 | 25 | 60 | 100 | At the time of application |
| RA (B1 Electrical or B2 Mechanical) | 15 | 60 | 25 | 100 | During the exam |
| XE (XE0 Engineering Mathematics + any 2 of XE1 to XE9) | 15 | 15 | 2 × 35 = 70 | 100 | During the exam |
| XH (XH0 Reasoning and Comprehension + 1 of XH1 to XH6) | 15 | 25 | 60 | 100 | At the time of application |
| XL (XL0 Chemistry + any 2 of XL1 to XL5) | 15 | 25 | 2 × 30 = 60 | 100 | During the exam |
In the XE and XL papers of the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern, you can switch an optional section during the exam, but you must first de-select the old 1. The portal then deletes every answer you gave in that section, after a warning. Decide early and avoid switching late in the paper.
Robotics and Automation (RA): The Newest Paper in the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern
RA is the 30th paper and follows the same GATE 2027 Marking Scheme as every other paper. Part A carries 60 marks across 39 questions (18 of 1 mark and 21 of 2 marks) and is common for everyone. Part B carries 25 marks across 16 questions (7 of 1 mark and 9 of 2 marks), and you pick B1 Electrical or B2 Mechanical inside the exam hall. Textile Engineering has also moved into XE as section XE9 from this year.
GATE 2027 Exam Pattern for CSE, ECE, EE, ME and Civil
For the 5 branches we cover on GateNotes, the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and GATE 2027 Marking Scheme are identical. The real difference is in the subject content and in which second paper you are allowed to pair with your main paper.
| Branch (code) | GA | Engineering Mathematics | Core subject | Allowed second paper (tentative) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science and IT (CS) | 15 | 13 | 72 | DA, EC, GE, MA, PH, RA, ST, ME |
| Electronics and Communication (EC) | 15 | 13 | 72 | CS, DA, EE, IN, PH, RA |
| Electrical (EE) | 15 | 13 | 72 | DA, EC, IN, PH, RA |
| Mechanical (ME) | 15 | 13 | 72 | AE, DA, IN, NM, PI, XE, RA, CS |
| Civil (CE) | 15 | 13 | 72 | AE, AG, AR, ES, GE, NM, XE |
Within the 72 core marks of the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern, some subjects carry far more weight than others. Our subject-wise breakdowns for CSE, ECE, EE, ME and Civil show where those marks come from, so you can plan your time around the GATE 2027 paper pattern.
From Raw Marks to GATE Score: Normalisation and Qualifying Marks
The marks you earn under the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme are not the final number on the scorecard. For papers held in more than 1 session, IIT Madras first converts raw marks into normalised marks, so that a harder session does not hurt its candidates. The formula compares each session using the average of its top 0.1% and its mean plus standard deviation. IIT Madras will confirm which papers run in multiple sessions with the exam schedule.
Next, the GATE 2027 qualifying marks for the General category are fixed as the higher of 25 and the mean plus standard deviation of all candidates, but never above 40. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 9/10 of that mark, and SC, ST and PwD candidates need 2/3 of it. Here is how the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme feeds into your final score.
| Item | Rule in GATE 2027 |
|---|---|
| General qualifying marks | max(25, min(40, mean + standard deviation)) |
| OBC-NCL / EWS qualifying marks | 9/10 of General |
| SC / ST / PwD qualifying marks | 2/3 of General |
| GATE score at the General qualifying mark | 350 |
| GATE score at the top 0.1% average | 900 |
| Scorecard validity | 3 years from the result date |
This rule explains a pattern many students notice. When a paper is tough and the average is low, the General qualifying mark drops to the floor of 25. That is why GATE ECE had a cutoff of exactly 25 in both 2024 and 2025. Because of the GATE 2027 negative marking, the official FAQs also note that some candidates end with a negative total.
Exam Day Rules That Shape the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern
A few exam-hall rules from the brochure sit on top of the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and GATE 2027 Marking Scheme, and they affect how you actually attempt the paper:
- You can sit in your seat 40 minutes before the start and read the instructions from 20 minutes before.
- Login closes 15 minutes after the start time, and nobody can leave before the paper ends.
- Only the on-screen virtual scientific calculator is allowed under the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern. Practise on it, since it is slower than a handheld calculator.
- You get 1 scribble pad at a time and must return it to get the next.
- PwD candidates eligible under the 2025 government guidelines get 20 extra minutes per hour, up to 4 hours in total.
- The paper closes on its own when the time is up.
What Is New in the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern?
The core GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and GATE 2027 Marking Scheme are the same as GATE 2026: 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours and the same negative marking. The changes are around the papers:
- A new paper, Robotics and Automation (RA), takes the count to 30 papers.
- Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is no longer a separate paper. It is now section XE9 of XE.
- The section codes of XE, XH and XL have changed.
- The syllabus of most papers has been revised, though the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern itself stays the same.
- RA has been added as an allowed second paper for CS, EC, EE and ME.
How to Use the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme in Your Preparation
Knowing the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme is only useful if it changes how you practise. From now till February, use these 4 habits, built on the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern, in every mock test:
- Attempt every MSQ and NAT you have worked on, since the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme gives no penalty for a wrong answer there.
- Attempt an MCQ only after removing at least 1 option, and keep your MCQ accuracy above 80%.
- Round NAT answers only at the last step, and enter the exact decimal places asked.
- Do General Aptitude first or last, but never skip it. Its 15 marks are the easiest in the paper.
If you want a week-by-week plan built around this pattern, use our 4-month schedules for CSE, ECE, EE, ME and Civil. For the official source, see the GATE 2027 question paper pattern page and the GATE 2027 Information Brochure.
Final Word on the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme
The GATE 2027 Exam Pattern is simple on paper: 65 questions, 100 marks and 3 hours. The GATE 2027 Marking Scheme is where marks are won or lost, because only MCQs carry a penalty while MSQs and NATs are free to attempt. Students who know these rules well take smarter risks and lose fewer marks to careless guessing.
Save this page and come back to the GATE 2027 Exam Pattern tables before each mock test. Practise with the virtual calculator, track your MCQ accuracy, and use the GATE 2027 Marking Scheme to decide which questions to attempt. We will update this post if IIT Madras makes any change before the exam.
