The GATE EE Syllabus 2027 has no change in content from last year. We placed the official IIT Madras PDF next to the GATE 2026 PDF from IIT Guwahati and compared them line by line. Apart from the institute name in the header and 1 spelling fix, every topic in all 10 sections is the same. So your 2026 notes, books and previous year papers are still fully valid for the Electrical Engineering (EE) paper.
This page covers the topic wise GATE EE Syllabus 2027, recent section-wise marks and the exam pattern. If you want to know which section gives the most marks for the least effort, read our guide on the most scoring subject for GATE EE 2027. All our other Electrical Engineering posts are in the GATE EE section.
Has the GATE EE Syllabus Changed for 2027?
No. The GATE EE Syllabus 2027 is word for word the same as the GATE 2026 syllabus. We found only 2 small differences, and neither one changes what you need to study:
- The header now says “GATE 2027, IIT Madras” in place of “GATE 2026, IIT Guwahati”.
- In Analog and Digital Electronics, “Butterwoth” has been corrected to “Butterworth” filters.
Unlike EE, the GATE ECE Syllabus 2027 was revised with new topics. With the GATE EE Syllabus 2027 unchanged, you can spend your time on practice, not on new topics.
GATE EE Exam Pattern 2027
The GATE EE exam pattern 2027 has 65 questions worth 100 marks, to be solved in 3 hours in computer-based test (CBT) mode. The paper is split into General Aptitude and the subject part, as shown below.
| Part | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 | 15 |
| Engineering Mathematics | About 9 | 13 |
| Core Electrical Engineering (9 sections) | About 46 | 72 |
| Total | 65 | 100 |
Questions come in 3 types: MCQ, MSQ and NAT. Only wrong MCQs carry negative marks, 1/3 mark for a 1-mark question and 2/3 mark for a 2-mark question. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking.
GATE EE Syllabus 2027 Weightage: Marks per Section
IIT Madras does not publish a weightage for each section, so the table below uses the actual marks from the GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026 EE papers. Use the 3-year average as your guide for the GATE EE Syllabus 2027 weightage, not as a fixed promise, because the marks shift a little every year. A few marks each year come from questions that mix 2 sections, so some columns add up to slightly less than 100.
| Section | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Average |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | 15 | 15 | 15.0 |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 | 13 | 13 | 13.0 |
| Electric Circuits and Electromagnetic Fields | 11 | 9 | 18 | 12.7 |
| Power Systems | 10 | 9 | 12 | 10.3 |
| Power Electronics | 11 | 10 | 10 | 10.3 |
| Electrical Machines | 8 | 9 | 9 | 8.7 |
| Signals and Systems | 11 | 9 | 5 | 8.3 |
| Control Systems | 9 | 9 | 6 | 8.0 |
| Analog and Digital Electronics | 9 | 9 | 7 | 8.3 |
| Electrical and Electronic Measurements | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2.7 |
Engineering Mathematics has carried exactly 13 marks for 4 years in a row, which makes it the most predictable part of the paper. Electric Circuits, Power Systems and Power Electronics together cover about 33 marks, so these 3 sections should get the most hours in your plan.
Topic Wise GATE EE Syllabus 2027
Below are the 10 official sections of the GATE EE Syllabus 2027, in the order of the IIT Madras PDF, with the topics asked most often in past papers.
Section 1: Engineering Mathematics (13 Marks)
This section covers Linear Algebra (matrices, eigen values and eigen vectors), Calculus (mean value theorems, multiple integrals, Fourier series and vector calculus with Gauss’s, Stokes’s and Green’s theorems), Differential Equations, Complex Variables (Cauchy’s theorem and residue theorem) and Probability and Statistics. Asked most: eigen values, residue theorem and probability distributions.
Section 2: Electric Circuits
Topics are KCL, KVL, node and mesh analysis, Thevenin’s, Norton’s, superposition and maximum power transfer theorems, DC and AC transients, resonance, two-port networks, balanced 3-phase circuits, star-delta transformation, complex power and power factor. Asked most: transients and two-port parameters.
Section 3: Electromagnetic Fields
Topics are Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law, electric field and potential due to point, line, plane and spherical charges, capacitance, Biot-Savart law, Ampere’s law, Faraday’s law, Lorentz force, inductance and magnetic circuits. Asked most: capacitance of simple shapes and magnetic circuits.
Section 4: Signals and Systems
Topics are continuous and discrete time signals, LTI and causal systems, Fourier series, sampling theorem, Fourier transform, Laplace transform, Z transform, and RMS and average values of periodic waveforms. Asked most: Z transform, Fourier transform properties and LTI system checks.
Section 5: Electrical Machines
This section covers single-phase and 3-phase transformers (tests, regulation, vector groups, parallel operation), auto-transformers, DC machines and their speed control, 3-phase induction motors (torque-speed curves, starting and speed control), single-phase induction motors, synchronous machines, and losses and efficiency. Asked most: induction motor torque-speed questions and transformer efficiency.
Section 6: Power Systems
Topics are power generation, AC and DC transmission, transmission line models, economic load dispatch, series and shunt compensation, insulators, per-unit quantities, bus admittance matrix, Gauss-Seidel and Newton-Raphson load flow, symmetrical components, fault analysis, protection, circuit breakers and the equal area criterion. How to Use the GATE EE Syllabus 2027 in Your Preparation
Since the GATE EE Syllabus 2027 has not changed, every EE question asked from 2016 onwards is still relevant. Take the official PDF, mark each topic as done, weak or not started, and fill the gaps in your weak topics with previous year questions. Start with the high-weightage sections (Circuits, Power Systems and Power Electronics), and leave Measurements for the final revision weeks.
