These free GATE ME Notes give you 10 handwritten PDF files for the Mechanical Engineering paper, from Engineering Mathematics and Strength of Materials to Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and RAC. That is about 2,300 scanned pages, and every file can be downloaded from Google Drive at no cost and without signing up.
Before you download, it helps to know where these notes are strong and where they are thin. So this guide also checks each set of GATE ME Notes against the 4 sections of the official GATE 2027 ME syllabus, shows which topics are missing, and lists the new 2027 topics you should add. The ME syllabus changed more than most branches this year, so read our GATE ME syllabus 2027 guide alongside this page.

All 10 GATE ME Notes PDF links were working when this page went live on 31 October 2026, and every file is a scan of handwritten notes with worked examples and solved questions. The files total about 507 MB, and Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics are the largest at about 70 MB each, so use Wi-Fi.
2 things to note if you have seen these notes listed elsewhere. The file sometimes labelled Engineering Mechanics is actually Engineering Mathematics, covering topics like orthogonal vectors and Taylor series. And Applied Thermodynamics is not a separate file; it is the same Thermodynamics PDF linked twice, so you only need 1 copy.
GATE ME Notes Coverage Check: Section by Section
The GATE 2027 ME paper has General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and 3 technical sections. This scorecard shows how much of each one these GATE ME Notes cover. Marks are from 1 GATE 2025 ME set and give a rough idea of each section’s share.
| Section | Marks in a 2025 set | Covered by these notes | Missing | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | None (use the separate GA notes PDF below) | Whole section | None |
| Engineering Mathematics | 15 | Engineering Mathematics | Nothing major | Full |
| Applied Mechanics and Design | 23 | Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines and Vibrations, Machine Design | Engineering Mechanics | Mostly |
| Fluid Mechanics and Thermal Sciences | 22 | Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, RAC | No separate file for IC engines or turbomachinery | Mostly |
| Materials, Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering | 25 | Metal Cutting, Material Science | Casting, forming, welding, metrology, CAD/CAM, Industrial Engineering | Partial |
The pattern is clear. These GATE ME Notes are strongest in Applied Mechanics, Design and Thermal Sciences, and in Engineering Mathematics, which many free sets leave out. The weak spot is the manufacturing section, which carried the most marks in the 2025 set. Plan extra study for it from the start rather than in January.
New 2027 Topics to Add to Your GATE ME Notes
These notes follow the older syllabus, while the GATE 2027 ME syllabus adds a long list of topics. Here is where each new topic fits, so you can add a few pages to the right file:
- Theory of Machines and Vibrations notes: 2-degree-of-freedom systems, damping estimation, transmissibility, and basic control systems with transfer functions and the PID controller.
- Strength of Materials and Machine Design notes: 2D stress and strain transformation, thin-walled pressure vessels and belt drives.
- Fluid Mechanics notes: velocity potential, 1D high-speed compressible flow and nozzles, and pumps with pump characteristics.
- Heat Transfer and Thermodynamics notes: boiling and condensation, and the basics of combustion.
- Material Science notes: polymers, composites and ceramics.
- Metal Cutting notes: ASA and ORS tool geometry.
- Your own manufacturing notes: casting defects, solid-state welding, non-destructive testing, additive manufacturing, and CAD/CAM with PLCs and actuators.
- Your own Industrial Engineering notes: work study, productivity, six sigma, and quality and reliability.
2 older topics are no longer named in the syllabus, Lagrange’s equation and Heisler’s charts, so you can skim those pages in your GATE ME Notes rather than study them in detail.
How to Fill the Gaps in These GATE ME Notes
3 parts of the paper need material beyond these files. Here is a simple way to cover each without buying a full coaching package:
Engineering Mechanics: it carried only about 2 marks in the 2025 set, so a short self-made note is enough. Cover free-body diagrams, equilibrium, friction, trusses and the basics of impulse and momentum, then solve its previous year questions.
Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering: this is the biggest gap. Use a standard production engineering book for casting, forming, welding and metrology, and keep separate pages for Industrial Engineering topics like forecasting, inventory, linear programming, queuing and PERT/CPM. These topics are formula-based, so previous year questions teach the patterns quickly.
General Aptitude: no ME subject file covers it, so download our free GATE General Aptitude notes PDF. It explains the rules and formulas for all 4 GA sections and ends with 25 practice questions. Then solve 1 GA set from a previous year paper every day.
Our guide to the highest scoring subjects for GATE ME 2027 shows exactly where the marks come from, which helps you decide how much time each gap deserves.
Pair Each GATE ME Notes File With These PYQ Topics
Notes teach the concept, but previous year questions show how GATE asks it. After you finish a file, practise the topics below, which come up again and again in past ME papers:
| GATE ME Notes file | PYQ topics to practise after reading |
|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | Eigenvalues, rank and systems of equations, probability distributions, differential equations, numerical methods |
| Strength of Materials | Mohr’s circle, bending and shear stress, deflection of beams, torsion of shafts, columns |
| Theory of Machines and Vibrations | Gear trains, flywheels, cams, natural frequency, damping and transmissibility |
| Machine Design | Fatigue with Goodman and Soderberg lines, bearing life, gears, bolted and welded joints |
| Fluid Mechanics | Bernoulli’s equation, pipe flow losses, boundary layer, momentum equation, turbines and pumps |
| Thermodynamics | First and second laws, entropy, availability, Rankine, Brayton and Otto cycles |
| Heat Transfer | Conduction through walls and cylinders, fins, lumped capacitance, LMTD and NTU methods, radiation |
| RAC | Vapour compression cycle COP, psychrometric processes, air conditioning loads |
| Metal Cutting | Merchant’s circle, cutting forces, Taylor’s tool life equation, machining time and cost |
| Material Science | Iron-carbon diagram, heat treatment, crystal structures, stress-strain behaviour |
Solve at least 15 to 20 previous year questions per file before moving to the next one. If you get a question wrong, go back to the matching page of your GATE ME Notes and mark it, so your revision in January focuses only on the weak pages.
Best Order to Study These GATE ME Notes
Study the GATE ME Notes in blocks that share the same ideas, so each subject builds on the last:
- Engineering Mathematics first: it is a full 15-mark block with complete notes, and it supports every other subject.
- Strength of Materials, then Machine Design: design questions use stress, strain and failure theories directly from Strength of Materials.
- Theory of Machines and Vibrations: add the new 2-DOF and PID pages as you go.
- Thermodynamics, then RAC: RAC applies the same cycles and property tables.
- Fluid Mechanics, then Heat Transfer: convection in Heat Transfer relies on boundary layer ideas from Fluid Mechanics.
- Material Science and Metal Cutting, plus your own manufacturing and Industrial Engineering notes: give this block extra weeks, since it carries the most marks.
After each chapter, solve the previous year questions on it the same day. For a month-by-month version of this order with mock test targets, follow the GATE ME 2027 4 months preparation plan. Keep your mock scores well above the qualifying line too: the General cutoff ranged from 25.2 to 35.8 in recent years, as shown in our GATE ME previous year cutoff analysis.
Notes for other branches are also available: see the GATE CSE notes, GATE ECE notes and GATE EE notes with formula sheets. Marking rules for all papers are explained in the GATE 2027 exam pattern guide.
